Causes
- Age:As we age, the spinal discs and joints gradually wear down, losing height and elasticity. This can lead to narrowing of the spinal canal, putting pressure on the spinal nerves.
- Arthritis:Osteoarthritis, a common form of arthritis, causes the breakdown of cartilage in the joints, including those in the spine. Bone spurs may form as a result, which can further narrow the spinal canal and compress nerves.
- Thickening of Ligaments:Over time, the ligaments within the spine, particularly the ligamentum flavum, can thicken and stiffen. This thickening reduces space in the spinal canal, leading to increased pressure on the spinal cord and nerves.
