Biography

Dr. Kley is a globally renowned orthopaedic surgeon with extensive experience in the complete field of hip and knee surgery, having performed thousands of successful surgeries and continually pushing the boundaries of surgical innovation. He has pioneered a modification of the Röttinger approach into the RapidRecovery hip replacement technique. This technique is unparalleled in terms of its ability to deliver safe and rapid recovery.

His journey into medicine began after fulfilling his civil service in Germany. Initially passionate about carpentry, Dr. Kley pivoted to medicine, starting with an apprenticeship. This decision set him on a path to becoming one of the most respected specialists in his field.

Early in his medical studies, a personal cruciate ligament injury sparked his interest in trauma and orthopaedic surgery. This experience led him to connect with Professor Phillipp Lobenhoffer, a highly respected expert in ligament surgery and knee osteotomy. In his final year of medical school, Dr. Kley spent three transformative months in Professor Lobenhoffer’s department, which solidified his career path. He later secured a position under the professor’s guidance, mastering and even helping to influence techniques in knee surgery and osteotomy.

After completing his training, Dr. Kley became a partner in the practice. With two colleagues already specialising in knee procedures, he decided to explore hip surgery. During this time in Munich, he observed a highly skilled surgeon at Orthopädische Chirurgie München (OCM) who could complete hip replacements in just half an hour. Inspired, Dr. Kley began refining his own approach—streamlining and enhancing surgical techniques, optimising instrument trays, and improving overall processes. His commitment to precision and efficiency has since established him as a global leader in hip surgery, known for performing procedures swiftly and safely.

Today, Dr. Kley is a highly sought-after expert, delivering over 15 international lectures annually to esteemed medical audiences. His dedication to research and surgical advancement is evident, with 25 publications on knee osteotomy listed in PubMed over the past three years. Dr. Kley has performed over 3,000 hip replacements, more than 1,000 total knee replacements, over 1,500 unicondylar knee surgeries, and hundreds of ligament surgeries. His ongoing contributions continue to shape the field of orthopaedic surgery, as he shares his expertise and innovations with peers worldwide.

Dr. Kley is an active member of the international orthopaedic community, serving on the developers board for the Joint Preservation Expert Group of the AO Foundation. He has also provided his expertise to Arthrex, contributing to advancements in osteotomy techniques around the knee and leading the development and scientific committees for their training platform. Additionally, Dr. Kley has consulted for Brainlab on trauma surgery innovations and collaborated with PeekMed, a company specialising in AI technology for surgical procedures. As a member of ESSKA (European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy), he has organised and led numerous international courses, sharing his knowledge and training surgeons worldwide.
